The Los Angeles Dodgers could be in the market for a third baseman this winter. They could make a run at one of the best players in free agency to fill their need.

Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox last winter. However, his deal has a player option that would allow him to become a free agent after this season. With how he has performed so far, it seems like a foregone conclusion that he will hit the open market. The Athletic's Jim Bowden tabbed the Dodgers as a suitor for him if he does opt out.

"Bregman, who is making $40 million this year and signed for two more years at that rate, will likely opt out of his deal," wrote Bowden. "His free-agent market should be even more robust than last offseason with the Red Sox joined by the (New York) Yankees, (Detroit) Tigers, (Houston) Astros, (Philadelphia) Phillies and even the (Los Angeles) Dodgers; he would be an upgrade for all of them at the hot corner."

Bregman would be an upgrade from Max Muncy for the Dodgers. Muncy is in his eighth year with the Dodgers, but is struggling this year. He has a .208 batting average and a .663 OPS. He has a $10 million club option for next year. The Dodgers have already moved on from Chris Taylor and Austin Barnes, showing they are not afraid to move on from staples of the team.

Bregman is a two-time All-Star, but has not played at that level since 2019. He was still been a great player from 2020-2024, but 2025 is shaping up to be one of the best seasons of his career offensively.

He is slashing .304/.388/.565 and has hit 11 home runs so far. The Red Sox helped him make changes to his swing, but may have simply forced him back into free agency. The team will try to retain him, but the allure of playing with the Dodgers may be too much. However, his history with the Houston Astros and their cheating scandal could keep the Dodgers from making a strong push for him.
