The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a five-year, $265 million extension with Brock Purdy. However, a recent report from ESPN's Adam Schefter indicated they are the only team that would have done so.
Purdy was the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship Games. He was due for a payday, but perhaps there were doubts about him being one of the highest-paid players in the league. During an appearance on "UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio," Schefter revealed that other teams had no interest in Purdy.
"I remember talking to teams and just being like, 'Hey,' as they were trying to solve their quarterback needs, 'any interest in Brock Purdy?' And they were like, 'Great player, but he’s a great player for them.' So they didn’t see it that way. So that was the opinion of other teams," Schefter said.
The sentiment around the league was that Purdy is a great fit for the 49ers. However, not every team has Kyle Shanahan's system and Christian McCaffrey. Purdy's deal makes him the fifth-highest-paid player in the league, in terms of total value. It makes him the eighth-highest-paid in terms of average annual salary.
Purdy is indeed capable of being a franchise quarterback, but the problem is that there are concerns about his ability to win with less. Last season, the 49ers were decimated by injuries, most notably to McCaffrey. Purdy struggled as a result. Now, the 49ers are paying him $53 million and cannot afford to surround him with countless stars.

They lost key players on both sides of the ball this offseason, and now Purdy's ability to win without arguably the best supporting cast in the league will be put to the test. His deal has $181 million guaranteed and a no-trade clause, so the 49ers are trusting that the young signal caller can rise to the occasion.
